Pediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program

The Children's Hospital at Montefiore Einstein, the pediatric teaching hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been training pediatric pulmonary fellows since 2007. In addition to running a robust clinical service, the board-certified pediatric pulmonary faculty is actively involved in clinical, translational, and basic science research, and are members of national and international pediatric pulmonary collaborative programs.

Why our program could be right for you

At our ACGME-accredited three-year fellowship training program, the fellows gain extensive exposure in clinical management of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital airway malformations, severe asthma, chronic lung and neuromuscular disorders, respiratory failure, lung infections, and pulmonary manifestations of complex cardiac, rheumatologic, gastrointestinal, hematology and oncology conditions, as well as sleep pathology and mechanical ventilation. The program also offers excellent procedural exposure in interventional bronchoscopy, and interpretation of sleep studies, and pulmonary function testing. Our fellows rotate at the Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at New York University (NYU) for one month every year for exposure to management of children with cystic fibrosis.

The Pediatric Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Located on our Moses Campus, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein is a premier academic children’s hospital nationally renowned for its clinical excellence, innovative research and commitment to training the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. At this location, we have three full-time urologists who perform simple and complex pediatric surgery, including robotic surgery.

CHAM offered the perfect balance of mentorship, autonomy, and opportunity. I was supported in pursuing my specific interests—from research and teaching to hands-on procedures like bronchoscopy—while also learning from a unique patient population.

A challenging and innovative curriculum

The curriculum consists of 12 months of inpatient responsibility, with approximately six months in the first year, three in the second year and three in the third year, when the fellows are attentively supervised by an attending pulmonologist. Fellows have three months of outpatient rotation/elective during their first year, two months in their second year and one month in their third year. The remainder of the 15 months is devoted to research.

Fellows have ample opportunity to pursue research, with protected time provided for successful completion of research projects. The Division Members have their own basic science and clinical laboratory spaces. Fellows may also conduct research with affiliated divisions, such as infectious disease and allergy and immunology. The expectation is that each fellow will complete a research project, which may be clinical or patient oriented, or basic/ translational in nature. A scholarship oversight committee will monitor the research activity of each fellow to ensure maximum research productivity during the fellowship.

The clinical, procedural and research exposure is supplemented by a curriculum of didactic talks, journal clubs, and weekly case presentations. There are also interdisciplinary meetings, such as airway conferences in which complex cases are discussed with ENT, cardiothoracic and gastroenterology teams. There are also case-based conferences with the adult pulmonology division. Fellows are actively involved in this process and present at one to two conferences a month on average.

An unmatched diversity of experience

As a premier academic medical center serving the Bronx, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, Montefiore Einstein offers its postgraduate trainees comprehensive exposure to a broad diversity of patients and pathologies. The diverse range of experience available prepares our postgraduate trainees for future careers in their chosen field, be it in the research or clinical and/or non-clinical setting.
