Breakdown of resident duties by level
PGY-1
- Obstetrics
PGY-1 residents provide front-line care on Labor & Delivery, including managing laboring patients, performing vaginal deliveries under supervision, triaging obstetric admissions and assisting with cesarean sections. They develop foundational skills in intrapartum management, fetal monitoring interpretation, postpartum care and interdisciplinary communication. - Benign Gynecology
Interns care for patients on the GYN service with responsibilities including pre- and postoperative management, inpatient rounds and participation in a wide range of surgical cases. They learn fundamentals of perioperative planning, postoperative assessment and efficient management of consults for common gynecologic concerns. - Gynecologic Oncology
Residents support high-acuity surgical and oncology care, focusing on inpatient management, postoperative recovery and learning the workflow of a complex subspecialty service. Exposure includes assisting in major surgical cases and understanding multidisciplinary cancer care. - Complex Family Planning
Interns gain experience in early-pregnancy management, including miscarriage management and abortion care, pregnancy options counseling, contraception counseling and outpatient procedures such as uterine aspiration. They learn patient-centered counseling, ambulatory workflow, and evidence-based approaches to pregnancy options and contraception.
PGY-2
- Obstetrics
PGY-2 residents take on greater responsibility on Labor & Delivery, managing more complex intrapartum cases, leading portions of the workflow and performing increasingly advanced cesarean sections. They develop stronger decision-making skills around labor management, induction, operative delivery readiness and coordination with the multidisciplinary team. - Benign Gynecology
Second-year residents deepen their perioperative and consultative skills by managing a wider range of inpatient and Emergency Department gynecology presentations. They assist and perform more advanced portions of gynecologic surgeries and begin refining their operative technique and procedural autonomy. - Gynecologic Oncology
PGY-2 residents are responsible for the inpatient care of patients with gynecologic cancers. Their responsibilities include postoperative management; early identification and treatment of complications; coordination of multidisciplinary care; and ensuring smooth communication between the surgical, oncology and nursing teams. They develop strong clinical judgment and management skills for medically complex oncology patients. - Antepartum / High-Risk Obstetrics
Residents manage complicated obstetric conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, preterm labor and many other complex obstetrical conditions. They gain experience balancing maternal and fetal considerations, coordinating consultations and contributing to long-term care planning. - Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI)
On REI, PGY-2 residents learn the evaluation and management of infertility, endocrine disorders and early-pregnancy issues and develop their ultrasound skills. - Urogynecology / Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery
Residents evaluate and manage pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence and prolapse while assisting in outpatient procedures. They gain exposure to urodynamics, pelvic exams and approaches to complex pelvic surgery.
PGY-3
- Obstetrics
The PGY-3 resident serves as a senior resident leading the Labor & Delivery team, managing board flow and maintaining situational awareness of all patients. He or she delegates tasks to junior residents and coordinates care with nursing, anesthesia and faculty. He or she performs more complex cesarean sections; teaches junior residents as part of the C-section teaching team; and oversees management of high-acuity labor cases, inductions and obstetric complications with graded faculty support. - Benign Gynecology
The PGY-3 resident leads inpatient rounds; assigns responsibilities; and ensures smooth coordination of consults, operating-room schedules and postoperative care. He or she supervises junior residents in perioperative planning and consult management. He or she performs larger portions of major gynecologic surgeries—including advanced laparoscopy—gains additional exposure to robotic surgery, and develops higher-level operative decision-making and efficiency. - Gynecologic Oncology
The PGY-3 resident oversees postoperative care and the day-to-day medical management of patients on the oncology service. He or she identifies early signs of complications, escalates concerns appropriately, and communicates effectively with fellows and attendings. PGY-3 residents also participate extensively in oncologic surgery, assisting and performing portions of major procedures while building advanced operative skills. They lead tumorboard sessions and coordinate multidisciplinary management that includes medical oncology, radiation oncology, nutrition, social work and other supportive services. This rotation strengthens their clinical judgment, operative competency and ability to manage complex cancer care. - Elective/ Research Rotation
An elective block allows PGY-3 residents to explore subspecialty interests, strengthen research engagement or pursue focused skill development.
PGY-4
- Obstetrics
PGY-4 residents serve as the chief leaders on Labor & Delivery, providing the highest level of resident oversight for workflow, patient care and clinical decision-making. They collaborate closely with faculty to guide complex intrapartum management; respond to obstetric emergencies; and ensure smooth coordination among nursing, anesthesia and multidisciplinary teams. PGY-4 residents supervise and teach complex cesarean sections, helping junior residents progress toward operative independence while modeling strong communication and professionalism. - Benign Gynecology
As chief residents on the GYN service, PGY-4 residents oversee consult triage, operating-room scheduling and inpatient management, ensuring safe and efficient service operations. They perform advanced benign gynecologic surgery—including major laparoscopic procedures and robotic cases—with increasing autonomy and operative leadership. PGY-4 residents mentor PGY-3 residents in surgical planning, perioperative decision-making and prioritizing patient care. They also troubleshoot complex postoperative courses and system-level workflow challenges, maintaining high standards for team communication and clinical management. - Gynecologic Oncology
On the oncology service, PGY-4 residents assume a senior leadership role, guiding complex clinical decisions in partnership with fellows and attending physicians. They supervise PGY-3 residents in postoperative management, complication recognition and coordination with consulting teams. PGY-4 residents participate in major oncologic surgeries with expanded responsibility, strengthening their operative judgment and technical skill in both laparoscopy and robotic surgery.

Resident Research and Scholarly Activity
Scholarly inquiry is a core component of training in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Montefiore Einstein. Every resident completes a research project over the course of residency, developing the skills that define a thoughtful clinician: critical thinking; analytical reasoning; and a commitment to ethical, collaborative research.
The scope of a resident's work reflects his or her own interests, and projects have spanned clinical trials, education research and observational studies. Residents present their work to the department in their third year and prepare a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication during their final year.
The department helps support resident projects with dedicated biostatisticians through the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health, and our research coordinators help residents navigate institutional infrastructure from concept to completion. We also support residents in sharing their work with the broader field. Residents are encouraged to present at national conferences. Our goal is straightforward: to graduate physicians who are not only excellent clinicians but capable scholars prepared to advance the specialty.
An unmatched diversity of experience
As a premier academic medical center serving the Bronx, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, Montefiore Einstein offers its postgraduate trainees comprehensive exposure to a broad diversity of patients and pathologies. The diverse range of experience available prepares our postgraduate trainees for future careers in their chosen field, be it in the research or clinical and/or non-clinical setting.
Live and work close to the best of everything
The Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough, is a culturally rich neighborhood placed at the intersection of Manhattan and its surrounding regions. Our postgraduate trainees typically live in hospital housing or off-site in nearby Riverdale, Lower Westchester or Manhattan, and have access to an unmatched diversity of experiences beyond the program itself.
In the Bronx, with its ample parks and gardens, you’ll learn first-hand why it’s known as “the City’s Greenest Borough.” The neighborhood offers plenty of local food, art, sports and culture, and is just a subway ride away from Manhattan’s famed theaters, museums and attractions.
As a resident of the Tri-State region, you’ll have unmatched access to the city’s cultural offerings, not to mention the bounty of outdoor excursions that are available just beyond. Day-trips and weekend excursions to the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Long Island or New Jersey provide ample opportunities for swimming, hiking, biking, skiing and other seasonal activities.
