Pediatric Residency Program Virtual Tour

The Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) is situated within a world-class hospital system serving one of the most diverse patient populations in the U.S. Our mission is to train exceptional pediatricians who will strengthen the field of pediatrics and serve as advocates for all children in the communities they serve.

Brenda I. Anosike, MD, MPH, Director, Pediatric Residency Program

Why our program could be right for you

The Categorical and Social Pediatrics Residency Programs at CHAM focus on training independent and exceptional clinicians. As a tertiary referral center with all pediatric subspecialties represented, many of which are nationally ranked, residents benefit from world-renowned clinician educators and an unmatched diversity of clinical and advocacy experiences.

Trainees come to CHAM in order to care for the  rare, the complex, and the vulnerable. They seek to learn first-hand how to navigate a system where health is inseparably shaped by social and structural barriers. Along the way though, they find they’ve become part of the CHAMily; our family of trainees, faculty, staff and alumni that support and champion each other, each and every day through this process.

Sandra Braganza, MD, MPH, Director, Social Pediatrics Residency Program

Training clinicians as advocates

At CHAM, advocacy is more than a word in a mission statement; it has action and history behind it. The faculty and staff take pride in caring for the children of the Bronx, completely and holistically. Residents in the Categorical and Social Pediatric Programs quickly gain experience with social justice in healthcare and social determinants of health.

Residents advocate for their patients every day as part of interdisciplinary teams in the ED, inpatient floors, outpatient clinics, and Bronx schools. Many residents go further, bringing their advocacy work to the streets, town halls, the AAP and the Statehouse in Albany.

CHAM Residency Program: Preparing Pediatricians to Lead, Heal, Advocate, and Innovate

Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) is the pediatric university hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our Pediatric Residency Program welcomes 30 interns each year, offering exposure to the full range of pediatric subspecialties across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

CHAM residents gain experience and independence in a high-volume, state-of-the-art environment. Our faculty are nationally and internationally recognized clinical leaders and educators in pediatrics, and the hospital has consistently ranked among the nation’s top pediatric specialty programs by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals.

Through extensive experience managing both common and rare pediatric conditions, combined with mentorship from accomplished and supportive faculty, CHAM residents graduate exceptionally well-prepared for accomplished careers in general pediatrics or any pediatric subspecialty.

Our residents work hard caring for a complex patient population, but they still show up for each other to give a hand or find joy in the little moments like a birthday on the floors. That is what the CHAMily is, and you carry it with you for life.

Our premier academic children’s hospital

As the only children’s hospital in the Bronx, CHAM cares for a patient population multiple times larger than similar intuitions in the New York City region. We get to feel the impact of being at the heart of the Bronx and being recognized by our patients as part of their community. Scroll through to see and learn more about our primary training site.

The CHAM Pediatric ED

The pediatric ED at CHAM is one of the busiest in the region. Here our residents learn to provide immediate care for the sick and injured child. Residents at every level of training have equal opportunity to practice procedures, initiate the evaluation of complex and fascinating pathology, and take a primary role in evaluating and resuscitating acute patients. Fellowship-trained pediatric emergency medicine faculty and fellows support and teach our residents 24-hours a day.

The CHAM Inpatient Floors

Our three medical/surgical floors are where residents learn to care for and manage general and subspecialty patients with a focus on comprehensive family centered care. Senior residents develop critical skills as team leaders and clinical educators. Our hospitalists allow residents to gain graduated independence in their clinical decision making while still being accessible and supportive.

CHAM Pediatric Critical Care Unit

During PGY-2 and PGY-3 critical care rotations, CHAM residents care for the most critically ill children of the Bronx, including transplant patients and patients requiring ECMO and MARS. Our multidisciplinary teams allow residents to learn alongside pediatric intensive care attendings, fellows, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists and child life specialists.

CHAM Cardiac ICU (CVICU)

Residents on their cardiology, advanced cardiology and advanced critical care electives rotate through our CVICU. Teams here work closely with cardiac intensivists, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, and pediatric anesthesiology to care for children with congenital and acquired heart disease, as well as those recovering from complex cardiac surgeries.

The residents are the heart of CHAM and inspire all of us to practice our best medicine. Their dedication to improving health outcomes for the children of the Bronx is a constant reminder that there is no other place I would want to practice or teach.

Excellence in Pediatric Primary Care

Continuity Clinic Experience

Our residents have their continuity clinic experience at one of three sites across the Bronx. There they build their own primary care panel their patients grow and become the trusted pediatrician for their clinic families. At the beginning of intern year, each resident is assigned a clinic mentor and a clinic day to allow for longitudinal relationships (as well as clinic dinners and celebrations!).

Caring for our families beyond the clinic

The Division of Academic General Pediatrics at CHAM hosts several community engagement events and programs to support patients and families who receive care at these practices. Residents assist with coat drives, back-to-school backpack giveaways, and infant formula distribution during times of crisis.

Resident Team Coordinators (RTCs) are an integral part of our inpatient resident teams, and quickly become our interns’ new best friends. CHAM is the only program in NYC to have these incredible teammates, who help with non-clinical tasks such as arranging appointments, coordinating studies with radiology, and obtaining outside records so residents can focus on their patients rather than their paperwork.

Providing care to our newest patients

The Nursery and NICU at Jack. D. Weiler Hospital

Weiler Hospital is a short trip through the Bronx, just down the street from one of our resident continuity clinics, and houses Montefiore’s primary Newborn Nursery and Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Residents work along primary care pediatricians, Neonatologists, fellows, PAs, NPs and a highly skilled NICU team of nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists.

A hands-on NICU experience

Residents are involved in the care of every patient in the nursery and NICU, including at deliveries and family meetings. Faculty pair hands-on clinical training with monthly debriefs for residents to share their experiences in a supportive environment.

An unmatched diversity of experience

Categorical Residency Program

Our Categorical Program provides broad exposure across clinical sites and offers ample elective time to generate individualized, career driven schedules. Deeply committed to promoting social justice in a diverse and inclusive atmosphere, our program allows all residents to grow in an environment that fosters critical thinking, advocacy and leadership.

Social Pediatrics Residency Program

For over 50 years, our Social Pediatrics Program has fulfilled its commitment to training pediatricians with a special interest in advocacy, health policy, social justice, research, community and public health. Today, our program remains focused on promoting the health of diverse communities and vulnerable children. We aim to train future healthcare leaders who advocate for social justice through collaborative primary care delivery, community engagement and research.

Pediatrics Research Track

The Research Track in the Categorical Pediatrics Program is a unique opportunity for learners with a demonstrated passion for the advancement of pediatrics through research. It provides a pathway to become an effective physician-scientist supported by up to 11 months of protected research time and the resources of the Children’s Hospital as well as the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Child Neurology Program

The Child Neurology Residency Program at CHAM is a combined program designed for residents with a particular passion for providing primary and subspecialty neurologic care to children. Montefiore has one of the busiest ambulatory neurology services in the country, with particular pediatric expertise in epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, neurocutaneous disorders, and headache. Those interested can learn more about the Child Neurology Residency Program here.

What else makes CHAM special?

ImPACT in-situ floor simulations are high-yield, timely simulations led weekly by chief residents and nurse educators. In just 15 minutes each week, residents practice scenarios or bedside skills relevant to patients currently admitted, helping teams prepare before those skills might be needed in real life.

We are proud to announce a 94% board pass rate for graduating residents over the last two years! In addition to a robust board review lecture series, every PGY-3 resident (and now every PGY-2 resident!) receives access to the MedStudy Qbank. We use a longitudinal question-based curriculum to build knowledge and identify learning gaps for both residents and rotation leaders.

The Montefiore Einstein School Health Program is one of the largest, oldest and most comprehensive in the U.S. During Community Health rotations, residents provide health assessments, urgent care, STI testing, and contraception initiation in schools throughout the Bronx. While there, they work alongside physicians, social workers and mental health specialists who are experts at caring for these students and supporting their school communities.

CHAM is the highest rated training site for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine year after year. We are also extremely proud to see our residents consistently receive the highest number of Teaching Star Awards for medical student teaching every year.

In addition to hosting the occasional “Dinner with the Chair” on Arthur Avenue, Dr. Cabana hosts fan-favorite Professors Rounds each week. Residents and medical students learn as Dr. Cabana guides a faculty panel through a recent patient to demonstrate how to think through the evaluation and care of our most challenging cases.

Led by Dr. Sarah Norris, the CHAM Quality in Life Team (QUILT) helps care for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. Dr. Norris is a pillar for our residents in learning about end of life care, goals of care discussions, and debriefing after difficult events. Each year residents and staff raise money for QUILT as part of the CHAMpions for CHAM NYC Marathon Team.

MedEd leadership positions in residencies and fellowships across the country are filled with CHAM alumni who are sought after to bring the core tenets of a CHAM training to wherever they go. Those with a particular interest can explore our highly individualized teaching elective and receive longitudinal coaching on developing educational interventions and scholarship.

Advocacy at CHAM is not just for our Social Pediatric residents. Residents from both programs often find themselves taking an active role in local, regional and national discussions surrounding social justice as well as the health and safety of children.

The resident holiday schedule ensures that every resident has 2-3 days off for at least one of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s.

For over 50 years, the Child Life program at Montefiore Einstein has brought comfort and creativity to the children in the hospital. They work closely with residents to teach about medical play and stress reduction to increase the success of medical interventions, all while making kids in the hospital still feel like kids.

Social Determinants of Health screening is incorporated into every facet of clinical care both inpatient and outpatient. Uniquely at CHAM, we work with specialists from the Montefiore Einstein Community Health Worker Institute. Now residents learn how to screen for SDoH but also have the support of those who can help them answer “what do we do next”.

The Hot Topics Advocacy Curriculum is a small group series over the year that help prepare residents for difficult conversations inside and outside their clinical positions. They surround timely and high-impact stopics such as social media awareness, immigration health, reproductive care, health misinformation, Medicaid and health policy, and writing letters or op-eds. This curriculum has been presented nationally as a guide for programs across the country.

The Clinical Learning Environment Accountability Report (CLEAR) Portal is an anonymous online reporting system developed to help CHAM residents feel comfortable reporting concerns about professionalism or behavior anywhere in the hospital. Our program leadership and chief residents always have open doors, but CLEAR ensures that no resident ever has to keep a concern to themselves.

More than 70 pediatric faculty at CHAM are graduates of our own residency and fellowship programs. Their desire to stay connected to this community and to our residents helps build a culture of support, mentorship, and collegiality that extends the CHAMily beyond our three classes of residents. After all, they know exactly what it’s like to be in a resident’s shoes here!

Live and work close to the best of everything

The Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough, is a culturally rich neighborhood placed at the intersection of Manhattan and its surrounding regions. Our postgraduate trainees typically live in hospital housing or off-site in nearby Riverdale, Lower Westchester or Manhattan, and have access to an unmatched diversity of experiences beyond the program itself.

In the Bronx, with its ample parks and gardens, you’ll learn first-hand why it’s known as “the City’s Greenest Borough.” The neighborhood offers plenty of local food, art, sports and culture, and is just a subway ride away from Manhattan’s famed theaters, museums and attractions.

As a resident of the Tri-State region, you’ll have unmatched access to the city’s cultural offerings, not to mention the bounty of outdoor excursions that are available just beyond. Day-trips and weekend excursions to the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Long Island or New Jersey provide ample opportunities for swimming, hiking, biking, skiing and other seasonal activities.
