Why our program could be right for you
Fully integrated with Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, among the elite 1% of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S., as well as its state-of-the-art, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)-accredited Breast Care Center, the Fellowship offers immersive training in multidisciplinary, patient-centered breast care. Our training emphasizes compassionate, individualized treatment, minimally invasive techniques and a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer therapy, improving quality of life, survivorship and functional outcomes.
Montefiore Einstein Breast Surgery evaluates approximately 2,000 new patient consultations annually, and we perform an average of 766 breast surgery cases each year, providing fellows with high-volume exposure across all stages of disease and supporting progressive operative autonomy. Fellows play an active role in inpatient and outpatient care, participate in multidisciplinary clinics and tumor boards and have the opportunity to run their own supervised clinic.
Fellows gain hands-on experience with leading-edge approaches, including oncoplastic surgery, reconstructive and lymphedema-preventive techniques (axillary reverse mapping and the lymphatic microsurgical preventative healing approach—LYMPHA), intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), ultrasound-guided tumor ablation and novel intraoperative tumor localization and margin assessment. Through structured didactics, collaborative research and clinical trials, and mentorship from world-renowned faculty, our Program prepares the next generation of leaders in breast surgery for modern academic and clinical practice.
What makes our program unique
The Montefiore Einstein Breast Surgery Fellowship is uniquely positioned at the forefront of breast surgical oncology, where innovation and individualized medicine shape compassionate, patient-centered care. Fellows are routinely exposed to advanced and complex disease presentations and train within state-of-the-art facilities that support seamless, multidisciplinary care across all breast-related specialties. Progressive independence and operative autonomy, including a dedicated fellow-led supervised clinic, are core components of the training experience. This is complemented by integrated clinical exposure to breast imaging and coordinated patient visits with medical and radiation oncology, plastic surgery, social work, nutrition and comprehensive support services.
The fellowship is structured to provide a balanced and immersive experience across operative care, outpatient practice, didactics and research. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary conferences and case-based learning while engaging in collaborative research and clinical trials that support scholarly productivity. This integrated approach ensures that graduates develop not only technical excellence, but also the academic foundation and team-based skills essential to modern breast surgical practice.
Fellows gain hands-on exposure to contemporary axillary management strategies and surgical optimization in breast cancer care, including response-guided approaches following neoadjuvant therapy and evolving paradigms that safely limit the extent of axillary surgery when appropriate. Lymphedema prevention is embedded into routine practice, with surveillance in the clinic as well as axillary reverse mapping (ARM) incorporated for patients undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection, and experience with LYMPHA techniques as part of a proactive, prevention-focused model of care.
Training also includes participation in novel intraoperative margin assessment trials, wire-free localization and hidden-scar approaches, as well as advanced oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques, including nipple-sparing mastectomy, pre-pectoral implant reconstruction and oncoplastic mastopexy. Fellows develop expertise in surgical planning within multidisciplinary treatment pathways that incorporate neoadjuvant systemic therapy to maximize breast-conserving options.
